Hi MW friends! Everyone knows that certain smell inside POTC, right? Sleeping Beauty's Castle, and other dark rides have a similar smell. Can anyone tell us what it is, or where it comes from? I LOVE IT.
Bacteria. Seriously. Bacteria. And like other things, gotta keep it clean and let it breathe otherwise it get stank and nobody would want to ride the rides. - HotDiggityDogDaddy 1113.5 #172 8-23-11 11:41PMLikeReply
its called mold, mildew, musk, etc etc...even though there is cholorine in the water it cant get everywhere....here is a trick...dont clean your bathroom for a month and it will smell like POTC, no joke, - Dave 13812.7 #4 8-23-11 11:43PMLikeReply
@HotDiggity - seriously...so you are saying we are inhaling mold? lol, omg. Haha, I've heard others say they love the smell like me...and I am seriously allergic to everything and don't seem to have a problem...if this is true, it's kind of a downer. - Alicewhoareyou 2708.0 #54 8-23-11 11:45PMLikeReply
I don't like those smells. :( To me, they smell like chlorine with a touch of mold or something. - theDebsterM 138.2 #2970 8-23-11 11:46PMLikeReply
It's def true about the mold if you think about it... Such a moist environment it's inevitable - dsmdanny 144.9 #2852 8-23-11 11:47PMLikeReply
@ Dave...OMG... Thank you, I guess we have the answer. Makes sense. - Alicewhoareyou 2708.0 #54 8-23-11 11:48PMLikeReply
And for the record folks, I do not like the smell of mold, mildew, or bacteria in any bathroom or otherwise. lol, guess its the Nostalgia of Disneyland that makes it acceptable. I'll just pretend I never asked the question. - Alicewhoareyou 2708.0 #54 8-23-11 11:52PMLikeReply
I smell POTC everytime I wash whites and use bleach. Bleach kills bacteria. - Mrsblue 693.1 #296 8-23-11 11:53PMLikeReply
its not a big deal thats what it is, its not something you want to smell in your house - Dave 13812.7 #4 8-23-11 11:55PMLikeReply
You're right, the musty smell does add ambience and realism to POTC, seems to fit in with the attraction :) - Alicewhoareyou 2708.0 #54 8-24-11 12:08AMLikeReply
I think for the most part you smell the water. The air gets circulated with A/C that dehumidifies so I would expect that would prevent mold. - Westcoast 174.9 #2366 8-24-11 12:19AMLikeReply
That's the smell of history. Old houses, castles, Disneyland, I love it! It wouldn't be the same without it - Missshelly 698.3 #291 8-24-11 12:24AMLikeReply
Its made buy projecting sents from something called a smelzizer(spelling?) Created by walt to put all of the sensory details into an attraction. The machine is used on main st. to give the smells of the candy palace onto the street and in potc to give it the sense u really are ib the Caribbean. The smelzizer is used in otjer wttractions but potc and main street are the two best known uses of the machine - dnerd 294.0 #987 8-24-11 12:29AMLikeReply
The Carribbean doesn't smellitzer like bleach. - Mrsblue 693.1 #296 8-24-11 12:38AMLikeReply
It's called OLD!!! it's like walking into a vintage antique store. And POTC is just old water with chemicals. - Ms.Mouseketeer 1008.8 #193 8-24-11 12:44AMLikeReply
Yeah, the chlorine-like smell is given off when it's working hard to clean dirty water. That smell is not a good sign at a swimming pool. I think the Pirates smell is indeed that mixed with mildew. - disney42dude(CM) 522.2 #419 8-24-11 12:45AMLikeReply
I can now attest to that. But Nassau would have been greatly improved had it smelled like bleach. - unclebeezy 255.1 #1341 8-24-11 12:48AMLikeReply
I knew chlorine was used to clean the water, but for some reason the "old" smell is the only one that stands out for me...because some of the attractions with no water also smell the same. I do smell the "vintage antique store" when I'm there. - Alicewhoareyou 2708.0 #54 8-24-11 12:49AMLikeReply
Okay...I get that the mold, mildew, chlorine, etc. exist....but take a look at this: (thank you to dnerd - I looked it up, and Haunted Mansion is not just old...)...http://caaneo.ca/about/blog/vacation/smells-like-disney-how-the-worlds-biggest-theme-park-scents-its-rides

I can't access the link. What does it say? I know there's the gingerbread scent during HM Holiday. - disney42dude(CM) 522.2 #419 8-24-11 1:05AMLikeReply
it talks about a "musty scent" being injected into the cold air in HM, to add to the effect of an abandoned old house...also talks about others like POTC, possibly having "sea salt" smell. Google "smells like Disney" - I found the article there. - Alicewhoareyou 2708.0 #54 8-24-11 1:16AMLikeReply
