Are people really quiting by the dozens because of parking???
This thread is funny. Even though I have to leave an extra hour early, it doesn't matter... Why? Because I love my job, and I love working at Disneyland. The guests are the reason we have jobs! so if we have to park far away just to make it more convinent for our guests... It's okay in my eyes.and it's just 2 days. Not like it's the whole summer. Lol - TiffyMarie   302.2 #1041 6-6-12 11:22AM Like(13)  Reply

Tiffy your a shining example of why we love Disneyland employees so much. They are lucky to have you! - FaithTrustPixiedust  22.7 #7617 6-6-12 12:23PM
I am lucky enough to even have a job, for one, and two, its a Disneyland! How can I complain about the simple things like parking in a separate location for only 2 whole days!?!? I'll probably either park or get dropped off those days, but really? To complain about this? I believe that guests always come first - BaseballMickey   9257.8 #14 6-6-12 11:23AM Like(7)  Reply
Should DL have enough parking for the (new) capacity? Shouldnt that have been included in the expansion planning of DCA? Making a park larger increases capacity and therefore the parking should too...idk? - gigibunny2   242.8 #1602 6-6-12 11:15AM Like(5)  Reply
I'm sorry CMers but don't lose hope or carry on the frustration with you. Stay positive! - gigibunny2  242.8 #1602 6-6-12 11:19AM
I totally agree! Parking should be dealt with. Another parking structure really needs to be built and a new formula needs to be used to determine how much space they need. Carsland expansion actually took away parking, not the best planning IMO. - Autoalice  161.4 #2714 6-6-12 11:28AM
I take what I said back and apologize for my snide remarks. I really do love my job and guests really do come first. I had my first guest interaction in MONTHS a few days ago and the magic was refreshed for me. I do have other means of transportation and I wish the affected CMs the best of luck. - BCC   4783.2 #37 6-6-12 11:35AM Like(4)  Reply

i don't think Disney is greedy.. they're a business. they're in it to make money and it takes money to maintain such a wonderful park. just like anything else if i didn't like the price hike or whatever then i wouldn't go. and there are labor laws (and i'm sure unions) that protect the employees. Disney is not above the law.. - LolatheSlush  247.5 #1537 6-6-12 12:39PM
To my fellow CMs - stop bellyaching. You work for Disney. How awesome is that? You can handle a little temporary inconvenience so that additional guests can experience the Disney magic you have the PRIVILEGE to provide. And, given my 20 years here, I have never seen a company go MORE out of its way to minimize negative impacts on its cast members. So buck up and enjoy the magic. Capeesh? - Experiment818   1647.2 #129 6-6-12 11:44AM Like(4)  Reply
I can see how the extra hour or so of commute can be difficult. For some people, that means an extra hour of paying a babysitter, rearranging children's summer schedules, etc. This is probably not an easy adjustment for everyone to make. - ima-pirateswife   847.5 #267 6-6-12 12:09PM Like(4)  Reply
I am a Kindergarten teacher and earlier this week I got my notice that I will not be needed next year. I don't have a job for next school year.  I work very hard and due to the CA budget I can't hold a job for longer than one school year.  It really bums me out that people are quitting because of parking/travel issues.  I don't get paid for the time on the road.  I don't get paid for the time I spend after school in my room planning or the work i do at home on the weekends.  I work more than just the hours I get paid for and I don't complain because I love my job and my students and I am lucky to have a job for now. I'm one a few of my Credential Program classmates that has been lucky to have a job. I work down the street from DL and I would park at the Honda Center if it meant I could keep my job. - Sandcar13   1408.2 #155 6-6-12 12:39PM Like(4)  Reply
teachers don't get enough thanks and praise for all they do. the long hours and such.. i've been lucky to have a few really wonderful teachers, so THANKS for everything you do~! - LolatheSlush  247.5 #1537 6-6-12 12:52PM
Thank you. 😃 - Sandcar13  1408.2 #155 6-6-12 12:58PM
I'm so sorry that you got the dreaded pink slip! I heard that some districts are hiring teachers for a year and then bringing in new grads each year so they can pay them less as a way to reduce costs. It's sickening and I really hope it's not what's happening to you. Something else will come up! - ladylikesdisney  945.0 #242 6-6-12 1:09PM
It's ok. I'm used to it now. It has happened every June for the past 4 years. Anaheim City makes us temps with contracts that end June 30. So every year we have to apply, interview and hope we get a job somewhere in the district. - Sandcar13  1408.2 #155 6-6-12 1:32PM
I agree teachers are very under appreciated. they get pink slipped every year and literally have to re-appply and re-interview for their position (in some cases) and it sucks. Let alone some of the crazy parents and kids they have to deal with each day. They are basically preparing our youth for the future and they make it impossible..Im sorry you received a pink slip I truly am but I hope you get rehired which most of the time it happens. If it means anything I know La canada school district is hiring :) - PrinceTeaJack  958.1 #239 6-6-12 1:44PM
Ugh. You have my deepest sympathy. We had a teacher at our school that got pink slipped out after her first year teaching. The budget situation and the state of our schools - I could go on for hours. I'm on School Site Council and PTA board as a parent, and it's maddening what we have to watch the teachers and staff go through every year. And the funding issues are a nightmare. Our PTA picked up a lot of budget slack this year, but legally, we can't hire teachers. It's going to eventually reach the point that all the district pays for is salaries, and everything else will come from us, if the budget doesn't get better... - ThatStarWarsKimberly  417.6 #622 6-6-12 2:04PM
After reading this I may just take the bus in my costume (which ever that is). Yes, it's inconvenient but at least I have a job which took me a year to get and I'm thankful for that! - SUUZinOCretiredPLAID   1036.1 #225 6-6-12 11:04AM Like(2)  Reply

You live in Costa Mesa right? So do I. Maybe us AP holders can partner up and give rides to CMs that live near us on days that we are visiting the parks anyways. :) - Vegan7LuvsStitch  1057.7 #217 6-6-12 11:08AM
Disney does that to most CM =D - UncoolBunny  71.0 #4428 6-6-12 11:12AM
That the spirit - gigibunny2  242.8 #1602 6-6-12 11:17AM
If I was a regular commuter it would totally make my day to se a CM in their costume on my bus! There may even be a child or two on board who has never had the opportunity to go to DL and that could be a slice of magic for them. As a child I would have loved to have ran into a haunted mansion butler or someone from the future on a bus ride. - LisaMouse7531  410.1 #636 6-6-12 11:38AM
@LLD... Thank you, your so sweet. @Vegan.. I would love a ride and love that MWers would come to our rescue. @Lisa, I've gone grocery shopping after my shift in full costume (at11pm) and everyone stops me and asks me questions. The little kids just stare in awe and as soon as I say hello the entire family smiles. It's such a joy to witness. So, thank you all! - SUUZinOCretiredPLAID  1036.1 #225 6-6-12 12:27PM
I love it! That is so sweet SUUZ! - LisaMouse7531  410.1 #636 6-6-12 1:47PM
Let me get this straight....Garden Walk & Convention center parking is not enough parking? Wow *hugs* CMs - UncoolBunny   71.0 #4428 6-6-12 11:18AM Like(2)  Reply
To clarify read this in a happy tone. =D (More guest, more available shifts, more money in CM pockets but now parking stress and REALLY busy shifts) - UncoolBunny  71.0 #4428 6-6-12 11:26AM
When I lived in Long Beach and had an hour commute I think my employer would have laughed me out of my job if I asked to be paid for my time commuting, finding parking and walking a block or two to my building. I sympathize that it's frustrating and will create a hassle which can make things even harder on CMs that are having to work extra hard in the heat, crowds, etc.. But in this economy a job is a job and hopefully it is just for the couple of days mentioned and not a permanent change. Hopefully no one makes a rash choice out of anger to quit and then is hit with the reality of being jobless in this economy. - LisaMouse7531   410.1 #636 6-6-12 11:18AM Like(2)  Reply
There's a girl in my office who commutes from Anaheim down here to Torrance every day. Sometimes it takes her 90 minutes to get home. This job is totally not worth that but she does what she has to do. Sometimes you gotta. - LaneSparrow316  847.0 #268 6-6-12 11:32AM
Exactly! 2 hours! Whew! I became a fan of audio books from the public library and now Im a librarian... Commuter fate lol! - LisaMouse7531  410.1 #636 6-6-12 11:33AM
i agree.. i have an hr commute with no traffic and sometimes i have to park in the far lot which is approx 2-3 blocks from the entrance building and then another block from the entrance to my office (in heels) it sucks but its a job and sometimes it sucks.. but what are you going to do? i cant' quit.. i dont' have the luxury - LolatheSlush  247.5 #1537 6-6-12 11:37AM
At my Company in Valencia Guys here commute from Bakersfield and palmdale and Im just like OMG you guys are cray! But I used to Commute from Bakersfield To LA for 5 years thats 200 miles a day and 15 hour days. It was nuts but I was glad I had a job. some of the guys here work all week and they do it to support their family. Im grateful I have weekends off :) - PrinceTeaJack  958.1 #239 6-6-12 2:04PM
I wish parking and long commutes were the issues we had in our world. I would trade those issues, homelessness, unemployment to include the ability to quit, plus a vast of other "problems" for what we are going through now, and for the years to come. Just remember to hug somebody today, and tell them you love them. Life can change in a moment, and what seems so significant now (parking and commuting), will seem so frivilous. I apologize if this offends anybody ahead of time. I have a pair of shoes I'm willing to trade. - Sugarbuzz   339.7 #819 6-6-12 1:00PM Like(2)  Reply
(((Hugs))) Sugar. How are you both doing?? - SueBayou  2019.2 #99 6-6-12 1:06PM
Hi SueBayou- it is a never ending nightmare. Yet, there are still worst things in life than what we are doing. Trying to stay positive, believing something good will come out of this. 1 step forward, 5 or 6 back. So, OK I guess. MW really helps keeps us forward moving. Gives us a goal, and something to look forward to, keeps us positive, and not drowning in our own sorrow or pity party. Thx for asking. ((Hugs)) to you and yours as well. - Sugarbuzz  339.7 #819 6-6-12 1:16PM

I personally do not park in CM lots, I WALK to work all the time, although it is going to be tough for my fellow CM's to have to leave twice as early, they all have positive outlooks and just deal with it with a smile. I know my CM friends aren't really upset, more room for more guests to enjoy coming here and for all of us to spread the magic just a little more. 😊 - iPoca.   916.9 #247 6-6-12 12:15PM Like(1)  Reply
Yes!! :) - CuppycakeMermaid  144.3 #2994 6-6-12 12:18PM
I'm sorry, but I can't believe people are complaining of having to park further away for just a couple of days. Years ago I worked retail in a mall. The Entire Christmas season (nearly a couple of months!) we had to park a couple miles away and get bussed in. Walking wasn't an option, it was too far and not safe. You could be in our position, my husband got laid off in January. Applied to at least 150 jobs, had at least 40-50 interviews and we are still unemployed! We're about to look into cashing out our 401K to have money to continue to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table. Yes, it's an inconvience but at least you have a paycheck and there are ways to work with it and it's not long term. I'm sorry to be so negative but it just gets to me a bit. - Autoalice   161.4 #2714 6-6-12 12:25PM Like(1)  Reply
I have to park in the opposite end of the hospital from where I work. I look at it as extra exercise 😃 - KissDclown   1089.2 #212 6-6-12 12:44PM Like(1)  Reply
Bottom line... All jobs have pros and cons. From what I've heard, DISNEY can be difficult to work for. You take the good with the bad. If it isn't a fit, then we make the decision to go on to something else. I don't think CMdlgurl should have to apologize. None of us know what the real reasons are. There's always 3 sides to a story... His side, her side and then there's the truth. People just have to realize nothing perfect. But you can choose to make the best of things! - NurseJennJillO   314.6 #960 6-6-12 12:52PM Like(1)  Reply
haha i say the same thing about 3 sides to a story! - LolatheSlush  247.5 #1537 6-6-12 1:00PM
I know right??? Sometimes the stupid auto correct activates at the most inappropriate times but it made me laugh too! Maybe I shouldn't have edited it! Lol - NurseJennJillO  314.6 #960 6-6-12 1:07PM
This is an extremely evenhanded, sensible post. This seems to be the best way to approach things when problem solving and/or mediating. Frame this post! - Grindcore  614.8 #388 6-6-12 2:03PM
I think this is a silly reason to quit your job! It looks like they are not asking a whole lot of the CM and offering them other options to get to work. I would view this as an opportunity to make new friends by setting up a car pool, get some exercise. I have made MUCH bigger scarfices for my job. Talk to me about quitting when you get a double case load of kids who spit, bite, kick, barf on you on purpose, throw 2 hour tantrums and you have to take a 10% paycut. It annoys me when people throw away a great opportunity for something so silly. - tiggertwin   332.9 #852 6-6-12 1:00PM Like(1)  Reply
Eh. It's a hassle, but it's for the guests. And guests come first. If I have to go a little further than usual for 2 days out of the year to ensure that guests have a place to park, I will do it with a smile on my face and a "have a magical day!" :) - CMshelleybee   428.1 #606 6-6-12 1:09PM Like(1)  Reply
According to the article, HR is disputing that fact. I'd be annoyed but it's only two days in June..... - LaneSparrow316   847.0 #268 6-6-12 10:40AM Like  Reply
It's a week they're forcing us to park miles away. The compensation is not matched with what we have to give... if there's any compensation in the first place. - BCC  4783.2 #37 6-6-12 10:41AM
They're not at least providing a shuttle? Our building has been a parking nightmare for years. One of the solutions was to expand parking to the Home Depot down the street during major projects and offer a car-to-door shuttle. Overall, it worked fine. - Experiment818  1647.2 #129 6-6-12 10:44AM
I was actually planning to take public transportation that week... - BCC  4783.2 #37 6-6-12 10:46AM
Oh don't get me wrong, I'd be upset and it's not fair at all. Especially since the CMs are putting in extra work this summer. I'm sure if people were close to quitting already, this would push them over the edge. I just think there are tons of people looking for jobs right now that would be glad to put up with it as long as it wasn't forever. - LaneSparrow316  847.0 #268 6-6-12 10:46AM

Yowza. To E818's point - I would at least thought they would provide the CM's with a shuttle service. That's brutal. - EpicDio  460.3 #562 6-6-12 10:55AM
They will. The alternative they're offering people w/ BCML passes are to park in TDA. Not bad, but there are not enough spaces for executives and all BCML CMs... Like I said, I'm taking the bus that week. I need a few more points anyway. - BCC  4783.2 #37 6-6-12 10:57AM
In college, I had a friend who worked at DL and commuted from Claremont.  Clearly, she'd need a place to put the car when she got there, because public transit back then wasn't going to cut it, let alone now from that far out.  Best of luck to the CMs dealing with all the changes. - ThatStarWarsKimberly   417.6 #622 6-6-12 11:21AM Like  Reply
Uh, my old neighbor used to commute to work in downtown LA everyday for 3 hrs because of traffic, I don't hear him complaining. He leaves the house at 5 in the morning, I know because I may be up sometimes during that time and see him in his kitchen. - JediStitch   429.7 #602 6-6-12 11:40AM Like  Reply
Most dreams come with at least one major sacrifice 😊 I've given up a lot to do the job I have. And I honestly love what I do. It's not a very secure job right now since I'm low on the totem pole, but I'll hopefully work my way into a secure position. That's just part of having a job, lol. Ultimately I know that there is no perfect job situation and you have to suck it up and pay your dues in order to chase your dreams. A temporary parking issue seems like a very silly reason for CMs to quit, but there are plenty of other people who will be grateful for those positions. - Spoonful_O_Sugar   719.4 #334 6-6-12 11:48AM Like  Reply
It's just for 2 days people geez. Yes it's a drag but you have been taught that the guest comes first so why are CM's suddenly surprised? - CuppycakeMermaid   144.3 #2994 6-6-12 12:16PM Like  Reply
