Those are Brown or Black bears. The last Grizzly Bear in California was in the 1920s. Settlers, miners, and ranchers ran them into extinction. - PrincessLeia 263.5 #887 8-12-12 6:12PM
It *is* true. We still have bears in California, but not grizzly bears. The last one was killed in 1922. (Thank you, 3rd grade teaching experience and our field trips to Santa Rosa Plateau.) The grizzly on our flag represents our strength, and the star and the words "California Republic" are nods to Texas, another republic. - susieQzee 480.9 #247 8-12-12 6:13PM
There are black bears, but no grizzlies since the 20s. - Cginesi 157.1 #2193 8-12-12 6:13PM
Correct. The last grizzly was killed in 1922. So sad :( http://1.usa.gov/gUo2e - VeloMouseGirl 549.7 #203 8-12-12 6:14PM

I have a serious fear of bears. I used to work with them, and they always scared me. black bears not as much. as sad as it is, I like that I can camp and hike here and not worry about grizzlies :/ camping in yellowstone was scary - tuesday7371082.3 #79 8-12-12 7:04PMLike Reply
Bears scare me. I don't know what it is. I got to see a behind the scenes polar bear training session once, and even then I was freaked out, behind the steel grates and a window of plexi. I understand that completely... - flukefan 266.4 #863 8-12-12 7:18PM
