(http://tinyurl.com/bejcyh3) The Demolition of Rainbow Ridge: Nostalgic Disneyland fans have a little over seven weeks left to pay their final respects to some of the most visible remnants of the old Mine Train through Nature’s Wonderland. In January, when Big Thunder Railroad goes down for an extensive rehab, most of the remaining buildings in Rainbow Ridge will be demolished. Only the hardware store and the mercantile will remain. The mega-rehab, expected to last into the fall of 2013, will include upgrading the track, vehicles, show elements, and safety systems. The first faux storefronts were built in 1956, as a backdrop for the loading area of the new Rainbow Caverns Mine Train. (Several buildings were removed and others added with the addition of Nature’s Wonderland in 1960.) Originally, the hardware store was the left-most building and the mercantile was the rightmost building. In other words, the hardware store was the last building on your right as you entered the tunnel to begin your journey, while the mercantile was the first building you passed as you exited Rainbow Caverns and arrived back at the loading platform. When the Mine Train was torn out in the late 1970s to make way for Big Thunder, several of the original Rainbow Ridge buildings—along with various other show elements, tunnels, and sections of track—were left intact. But in recent years, we’ve lost many of those elements, including Cascade Peak, an abandoned ride vehicle, the animatronic gophers, and part of the bridge over Bear Country. We’re about to lose a few more.
Funny how it doesn't explain why the buildings are going away - BaseballMickey   7951.1 #11 11-12-12 9:37PM Like(2)  Reply

This SUCKS.....I rode it 5 times the other day since I knew it was going down but had no idea they were taking the rainbow ridge buildings out. I remember the original mine train ride. There will be lots of pics taken when I'm there in December! - acejedi   22.2 #7225 11-12-12 8:47PM Like  Reply
That is so sad. I wish they could save them and use them elsewhere. Thank you for the great information!!! - Boundin   792.3 #244 11-12-12 9:05PM Like  Reply
Thanks for the info. A lot of that I didn't know. It is a shame that more of that won't be saved as an archive of the ongoing changes to Disneyland. Someoneshould start a petition. - JKemp   38.1 #5485 11-12-12 9:12PM Like  Reply

This hurts my heart. I'm sure the refurb will be awesome. But the original pieces of the park and the history are what make DisneyLAND unique and what I feel helps to keep Walt's spirit amd his dream alive. Sorru so sappy. - PrincessKristin   780.8 #253 11-12-12 9:26PM Like  Reply
I was so upset when I read this tonight. Did you know these were one of Lily Disney favorite things in the park? I just read in one of my books that she and Walt would wall around them at night when they would stay in the park. - booboo23kitty   277.1 #1131 11-12-12 10:28PM Like  Reply

The last hill on Big Thunder is already a letdown due to the false climax lol I hope that the ride down Big Thunder Mountain doesn't slow down due to the new track like the new track on the Matterhorn did. - rbeezy   703.0 #292 11-13-12 1:41AM Like  Reply
