So planning a trip to DL for my sons birthday. If you were given the choice of staying at The Grand or having the extra cash to buy stuff with which do you pick?
The Grand is a beautiful hotel. However, you gotta remember that all you're going to be doing in the hotel is relax and sleep. All your play time is done at the parks. If you booked your trip at the Howard Johnson, you'll have more than enough money left over for tons of souvenirs. Especially for his birthday. Also, if you are planning your trip in the warmer months, I do believe they have an awesome little water park that they can keep occupied in. Either way, have an awesome time. - Waites4DodgerEars 967.9 #151 1-6-13 10:22PMLike(5)Reply
I'd rather have the extra cash. If anything put it aside for another Disneyland visit. - Linzee 793.9 #191 1-6-13 10:08PMLike(2)Reply
We always stay at cheap hotels. Can't fathom forking over a bunch of money for somewhere we just sleep - madsdad 1800.8 #66 1-6-13 10:34PMLike(2)Reply
I would stay at the grand! The ease of having ur room right there will more than pay for itself! Pack lots of snacks so you save $$ on the little things that will $15 buck you to death ...plus dunno how far out u are from your trip but someone suggested you buy disney giftcards each time you go grocery shopping so that you have stashed away $$ for Disneyland - PrincessLaShell 15.5 #7086 1-6-13 10:16PMLike(1)Reply
I would stay at the Grand. I have the luxury of going frequently so my hotel stays are what make the trip for me. The hotels beautiful and the pools are amazing. Plus it's so quick to the parks. It's worth the extra $$$ to relax. - DisneyBride°O° 420.9 #446 1-6-13 10:21PMLike(1)Reply
You could always split the stay between the hotels and have the best of both worlds. A stay at the Disney resort has great memories for me from when I was a kid. But I understand what everyone else is saying. - mlatour 328.6 #655 1-6-13 10:21PMLike(1)Reply
My vote is to stay at the Grand or the Disneyland hotel . But preferably the grand . My kids love staying there. I know I'm fortunate they don't ask me for much in way of souvenirs . Either way you will make the right choice for your family . Have a fabulous trip ! Your son will love being there on his birthday !!! - eviljules 841.9 #175 1-6-13 10:56PMLike(1)Reply
I think that everyone should experience staying on-property at least once. It's great to save money on hotels, but sometimes, it's worth it to splurge for a special occasion. In my opinion, I'd rather stay at the Grand and literally have DCA in my backyard for a few days than skimp on a cheaper hotel so that I can spend extra on souvenirs I don't really want or meals I don't really care that much about. We don't splurge on the Grand very often, but when we do, the trip is a much different experience because we never have to leave that lovely "Disney Bubble." - Spoonful_O_Sugar 521.4 #336 1-7-13 8:05AMLike(1)Reply
Stay on property. More convienent for quick trip to the hotel to recover from a busy day. We liked to go back and use the pool in the afternoon. Then return to the park for the night. - mlatour 328.6 #655 1-6-13 10:05PMLikeReply
My vote would be extra cash to buy stuff because they are going to want to buy stuff. I'm guessing its for your son in the picture. He'll probably enjoy toys more than a hotel stay. The Grand is lovely but the majority of kids don't really care where they stay as long as they get to go to Disneyland and have fun. - aidensmama 340.1 #608 1-6-13 10:07PMLikeReply
I would pick extra cash. I've never stayed at the grand, I'm sure it would be awesome and an experience for sure... But there are awesome hotels all around the resort. And I would rather have the extra cash to spend on my bday boy.. And dinners... Etc. especially if you are planning to spend most of your time in the parks anyways. - joybells 211.8 #1707 1-6-13 10:10PMLikeReply
Ohh, tough choice...but I say stay cheaper and buy something special you'll always treasure - DisneyDavidEMT 1551.0 #79 1-6-13 10:10PMLikeReply
We normally stay at the Best Western across the street its 98 bucks a night in April and The Grand is 360 a night. I'm planing to spend the money anyway just depends on if its for the hotel or stuff in the parks. - PlutosBuddy 403.2 #470 1-6-13 10:13PMLikeReply
I would stay at the GCH, only because I never have stayed there before, but actually would stay somewhere else and spend the extra cash. - Sleepingbeautysmom 294.0 #824 1-6-13 10:14PMLikeReply
The Grand is a dream ...however my mindset is this...I would much rather return home with all kinds of keep-sake souvenirs that will last him a life time, then to come back with just a memory of staying at nice hotel and the jedi sword that he really wanted..and the buzz light year sweatshirt, and the Mickey Mouse pin he almost had, and the Toy Story t-shirt he couldnt get, and the glow in the dark glasses that cost too much, and the mickey ears that weren't the ones he really wanted, and the ballons and the....and the....lol...I think you get the picture. :-) - Donna1988 213.5 #1684 1-6-13 10:16PMLikeReply
If we stayed at the grand, my wife would buy stuff too. So we stay off property - Murryd 296.8 #810 1-6-13 10:16PMLikeReply
Extra cash so I can buy even more souvenirs. How about staying at the Disneyland hotel? Still on site and you can save a tiny bit of money? - WeLuvDuffy 3.6 #23664 1-6-13 10:20PMLikeReply
All great input I am going to kick it around. Our plan is for end of April. It's a bit after his birthday but its a good time to take off from work. I'm kind of leaning towards extra cash. He is a bit too young to appreciate a nice hotel. It would be more for his mom and I . - PlutosBuddy 403.2 #470 1-6-13 10:31PMLikeReply
If you are going during the warmer months, I would stay at the Disneyland hotel for their monorail themed water slides. It is really a pretty short walk to the monorail from DLH - especially if you are on the far side of the grand. I actually prefer the DLH for convenience of having towers with elevators instead of the more spread out Grand. If you can afford it, there really are some nice magic things that happen at the Disney hotels - like character visiting in the lobby & amazing service. - sbminnie 96.0 #3426 1-6-13 10:31PMLikeReply
Here is my two cents of the night. Your going to pay between 350 and 450 for a hotel room were you sleep and shower? Could you stay else where and get to have an extra trip and goodies? Also you can eat at more restaurants too. Just something to think about... - PrincessAuroraMomma 450.4 #412 1-6-13 10:33PMLikeReply
The hotel is nice but not worth it imo. I say go for the extra cash. - happiestplace 98.3 #3388 1-6-13 10:40PMLikeReply
I'm greedy! I'd stay at the Grand AND take the extra spending money! Okay. Maybe stay at Parasise Pier and split the difference? Have fun, no matter
What option you choose! - MeridaFan 3250.3 #27 1-6-13 10:58PMLikeReply
Whenever I save money on a hotel, I can justify more trips. If I get the hojos Super Family rate, I feel like I just won the lotto. We go to DL quite often. We are usually there every 6-8 weeks and sometimes even more frequently. We also like to stay close to the parks and usually look for a deal at one of the crosswalk hotels on Harbor. My advise is to use the extra money to extend your trip. - LaPearleNoir 1173.3 #111 1-7-13 6:58AMLikeReply
Having the extra cash. The Grand isn't all that grand. - Lelundrial 458.6 #400 1-7-13 8:15AMLikeReply
Tough call but I say stay at paradise pier and compromise. Eat at grand Cali though if u can. Napa rose is fine dining at its best :) - missariel33 1402.2 #88 1-7-13 8:23AMLikeReply
It really depends on what type of visitor you are. If you plan to literally only be in the hotel to sleep/shower, then perhaps you don't necessarily need to spend extra on a hotel. My husband and I live in Oregon so it is worth the extra money for us to be ensconced in the Disney magic the entire time. Our favorite hotel is the Grand Californian and we like to get a Theme Park view so when we are in our hotel at all during the day, we can open our patio door and the sounds from the park fill our room. Our typical day consists of being in the parks from opening to just after lunch. Then we relax in the room for awhile and go back out the enjoy the parks just before dinner and beyond. But, like I said, it really depends on what you envision for your celebration visit. - MrsFletch 75.3 #3716 1-7-13 8:27AMLikeReply
How old is he? Having the nicer hotel may be more about you than him. Kids want the experience of the park, character meals, and special souvenirs. I'd say save the money and get him the experience elsewhere. Hojo has the better pool close by so if you may visit the pool during your stay go that route. I would do special on property stays when he is older. - girlzstylin 227.6 #1491 1-7-13 8:40AMLikeReply
I stayed at The Grand last year and was upgraded to a one bedroom suite. It was absolutely gorgeous and the experience was superb. It felt good being so close to everything! BUT we didn't spend much time at the parks because we wanted to lounge around in our room and hotel. It was relaxing and well worth the money if you can enjoy the room (I tend to love staying in nice hotels). We also stayed at the HoJo months later.. It wasn't bad and definitely served its purpose. We were able to spend the day in the parks and had a close by place to sleep. It was convenient. So I guess at the end of the day, it's a personal preference. I would pick a nicer place if I planned to relax inside. And an okay place if I planned more outdoor activities. - FindMeAtTheCove 237.4 #1361 1-7-13 8:54AMLikeReply
He's going to be 4. The hotel really is more for us. For the most part we sleep in then go to the parks until after lunch the back for a quick nap. Then we hit the parks til close. It seems everyone is pretty split. I think we will save the grand for when he is older.

This is a debate I alway had and it comes down to this. We only use our hotel for a bed. We stay at DL/CAL from open to close. We have decided that after we spent so much money on a resort hotel room, we really didn't get to enjoy it cause we only went to sleep so now we save outlet money for food and stuff. But if you do find yourself at the hotel more then it is worth it. So what it boils down to, will I be at the hotel or DLR more? - minnieMisty 271.8 #1009 1-7-13 9:40AMLikeReply
There's so many nice hotels along harbour bld that are just as close to the parks as the grand is and plus with the extra money saved instead of being able to go to Disneyland only every 5 years you can go once a year with the money saved staying at one of the good neighbor hotels - steffi 9.6 #9303 1-7-13 9:52AMLikeReply
