Good morning! This day in Disney history, Jan 9th, 1987. Star Tours opens in Tomorrowland (occupying the space where Adventure Thru Inner Space once stood). At a cost of cost of $32 million, It is the park's first attraction not to use Disney-designed imagery. The celebration lasted for 60 hrs. Guests could pay one-time admission into the park & get their hand stamped & return from Fri to Sun. Guests were also given a Star Tours Watch when they entered. The attraction featured the voices of Paul Reubens (a.k.a. Pee Wee Herman) as Rex the bumbling pilot droid, Anthony Daniels (pictured top right) as the voice of C-3PO, Steve Gawley as Red Leader, Dennis Murren as one of three ILMers (visible in a Maintenance Bay window), & Brian Cummings as the Vid-Screen announcer. Did you like the original star tours? Do you miss it? What are your favorite Star Tours memories?
I started dating my wife in the line of star tours back in 1990 when I was seventeen when she came over to the states us as a family friend. Yes I really love star tours. When we got to take our kids over there I told them the story and that if it wasn't for Disneyland they wouldn't be here. - AussiePirateKing   4.7 #16562 1-9-13 9:55AM Like(7)  Reply
Awww. What a sweet story! Do you live over here now? - MeridaFan  3264.0 #27 1-9-13 10:05AM
Awwwwww! How romantic! Where was your wife visiting from? Australia? - Duchess_SMK  5618.2 #14 1-9-13 10:24AM
No we still live in Australia. I have tried many times to convince her that we should move but she just won't be in it. - AussiePirateKing  4.7 #16562 1-9-13 10:31AM
On a visit to the park with my mom and dad in 1987 (I was 6), we rode this for the first time. Apparently it was so realistic, I was convinced that we had landed on the moon of Endor and as we left the attraction I very quickly (albeit calmly) asked "How are we going to get back to our car?" My dad loves to tell that story to this day. - FunOnABun   19.3 #6398 1-9-13 8:58AM Like(3)  Reply
That's a cute story. Great memory! - MeridaFan  3264.0 #27 1-9-13 10:02AM

As always... Love your Day in Disney posts. Thank you! I miss all the old Tomorrow Land attractions but really like the ones also! The new Star Tours is great!!! - Boundin   510.8 #352 1-9-13 8:52PM Like(1)  Reply
Thanks for the info. The one thing I miss the most is enjoying this with my mom. She isn't much of a fan of the new version. This was one of her favorites. Now she almost never wants to go on. :( - RickChavez   3238.0 #28 1-9-13 7:55AM Like  Reply
Awe! Do you know what was her favorite part of the old attraction? - Duchess_SMK  5618.2 #14 1-9-13 8:28AM
I still miss Adventure Thru Inner Space. I remember the first time I went to DL and saw it had closed. It was a very sad moment. As for the old Star Tours, it really needed the upgrade since it was the same every time. I hope they do something similar to Soarin Over California. - ScooterMike   1961.4 #61 1-9-13 8:03AM Like  Reply
Interesting idea about soarin Mike. What locations would you like to be added? Or would you just like the order changed up? - Duchess_SMK  5618.2 #14 1-9-13 8:37AM
Perhaps they could add more western states. The Grand Canyon and Monument Valley would be sweet. - ScooterMike  1961.4 #61 1-9-13 8:43AM
But it's soarin over "California" πŸ˜‰ would you change the name then too? - Duchess_SMK  5618.2 #14 1-9-13 8:46AM
How about "Soarin Over America"? - ScooterMike  1961.4 #61 1-9-13 8:48AM
I've thought this too- change to different Ca locations or at least not have the Christmas parade all the time. - LilSterner  4488.9 #18 1-9-13 8:58AM
It would have a lot more possible location fly overs for sure, but idk if it would stick with DCAs over all theme. - Duchess_SMK  5618.2 #14 1-9-13 8:59AM
Radiator Springs is modeled after Seligman, Arizona - ScooterMike  1961.4 #61 1-9-13 9:01AM

You never ride the original?! 😳 You poor thing you really were DL deprived huh? - Duchess_SMK  5618.2 #14 1-9-13 11:47AM
Wow! Return any time between Fri and Sun? That seems almost unheard of these days. I did enjoy the original, but I think the newer version is much better bc of the element of surprise. Thanks Duchess! - HandMeAChurroImmaFaint   3959.7 #24 1-9-13 8:29AM Like  Reply
I don't think the parks could handle such a promotion now do you? I'd love to see one of those watches! I agree, I love all the different destinations now. - Duchess_SMK  5618.2 #14 1-9-13 11:55AM

I was not there when it opened, but later that summer!! I won't tell you how old I was but way old enough to remember, lol!! We were SO excited and my cousin from Europe was visiting us. We went there the very first thing in the morning, such a fun memory for my family!! Thanks for making me smile with this post, hope you have a wonderful day!! 😊 - MinnieMousewife   737.6 #212 1-9-13 8:57AM Like  Reply
I can vaguely remember Adventure Through Innerspace. I did like the original Star Tours but am liking the new version that has so many options. I miss Rex though. - LilSterner   4488.9 #18 1-9-13 9:00AM Like  Reply
I love Star Tours, but I also still miss Inner Space. Once when the rest of the rides had long lines and there was no line for Inner Space, my niece and I rode it over and over for about an hour, laughing our heads off the whole time! It's one of my best DL memories. - debbiev   798.6 #194 1-9-13 9:25AM Like  Reply

I like the newer version of Star Tours...it's different almost every time, and I don't get "carsick" like I used to on the original. But I really miss Adventures thru Inner Space....I loved it! - Gia   801.8 #190 1-9-13 9:48AM Like  Reply
Hmmm. Maybe I should try this. Definitely remember the carsick feel! And not fondly! Hahaha. - MeridaFan  3264.0 #27 1-9-13 10:04AM

I definitely remember the Monsanto ride, which is how we referred to it. Did the old Star Tours. Haven't been on the new one though. If it won't make me sick, maybe I will try. - MeridaFan   3264.0 #27 1-9-13 10:07AM Like  Reply
I rode it for the first time with my mother in 89, she doesn't do coasters and just about had a panic attack before boarding. I even asked the CM for her what it was like, his explanation couldn't calm her down. Reluctantly, she rode and ended up having the best time, we both still laugh about her near breakdown. I miss the original because my kid would ride it 10 times in a row and honestly believe we were not on Earth anymore. I do love the new version also...it was time. - Linzee   868.9 #173 1-9-13 10:15AM Like  Reply
Wait. Im not your mom, am I?! Hahahaha. Sounds like me! - MeridaFan  3264.0 #27 1-9-13 10:57AM

STAR TOURS 1.0 The original. Before the idea of star tours disney had envision a ride based on their Black Hole space movie but was scraped.Disney partnered with Lucas as captain eo was directed by him.The simulators for star tour was military grade to give the ride experience the most realistic feel.Im not 100% sure but I heard stories that the C-3P0 and r2 units were donated and were used in the actual film are the ones you see at Dl star tours queue line. Also as people mentioned the 60 hr party this attraction was the only ride that created a line that snaked down all the way down main street, the only other being indiana jones and had a hidden mickey blasted on the starspeeder 3000 and on the moving parts conveyer. For a time you could get a view of the people mover and rocket rods zipped through the space port.As always disney leaves memories from past attractions hidden.on star captain rex is here and the lady who did the original safety video can be found in the new star tours the adventures continue. Also the second line queue was changed from a security checkpoint to a regular room with views of the planets. Star tours 1 never had a fast pass program. You can still experience the original still at disneyland paris. disney toyko closed the original star tours after the sucess of star tours 2 in dl and wdw. There are no idea when and if star tour 1 will be removed from disney paris at this time. => - pikarich   2709.8 #36 1-9-13 5:50PM Like  Reply

This was the first ride I went on when I was eight. When we got off, I turned to my dad and said, "That was a great ride, Dad, but I never want to go on it again" (scary for me). As an adult, my opinion changed (obviously). :-) - singinaurora   4.3 #18737 1-9-13 6:07PM Like  Reply
Thanks! Wasn't the line for this crazy? Anyone know how long it got? I remember seeing a comment saying it was all the way down Main Street but don't know for sure. - BrerRabbit   347.1 #595 1-9-13 7:14PM Like  Reply

We were at the Disneyland and it was the late afternoon when people started to gather in front of Star Tours (it wasn't open yet). We lucked out and got to be a part of its soft opening. It was a fun memory. - ElectricMayhemMom   808.1 #188 1-9-13 8:39PM Like  Reply
