Good morning! This day in Disney history, Jan 29th, 1959. "Sleeping Beauty", Disneys 16th full length animated feature premieres @ the Fox Wilshire Theater in Los Angeles. Story development started in 1951, meaning that in total, it took 8 years to make. Animation alone took 6 years because of the level of detail in each frame. Have you ever noticed that the film seems like a moving piece of art? Well that's because Walt wanted each frame worthy of being displayed in a gallery! At $6 million, it was the most expensive animated film ever made. Sadly, it earned $5.8 million, less than what it cost to make, meaning Disney lost money on it. It will be nominated for an Oscar for Best Music/Scoring of a Musical Picture. The voice cast includes Mary Costa (as Princess Aurora), Eleanor Audley (as Maleficent), Barbara Jo Allen (as Fauna), and Verna Felton (as Flora). Have you seen this film? What is your favorite part?
One of my favs! My favorite part of the movie is the music... Tchaikovsky!! The musical score features many pieces from Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty ballet, 1890. Thank you SMK! Love this movie. - MyPark   1298.8 #165 1-29-13 10:45AM Like(4)  Reply
Have you done the walkthorugh at Dl or do we have to add it to our list - pikaplaid  8318.8 #16 1-29-13 11:01AM
THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING THIS! Pretty Much the musical score of the movie was based on Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty Ballet... Once Upon a dream is a waltz from the ballet! - otilegna  2910.2 #61 1-29-13 12:00PM
No prob otilenga. Rich, that's one thing I have actually done. - MyPark  1298.8 #165 1-29-13 12:40PM
Thanks for the additional info, MyPark! Tchaikovsky is a brilliant composer, and I'd go as far to say 95% of the general population has heard his work, and they just don't know it ;) - JRDrummer_CM  875.4 #257 1-29-13 12:45PM
Yes! Definitely agree with you. The music from Sleeping Beauty always gives me chills. - kss4tink  218.0 #1921 1-29-13 10:15PM

The book at the beginning was actually made and has been seen in many exhibits. It was very common to use live shots as an introduction to a film winnie the pooh was the most used in this style. Also as part of Fantasmic ,murphy the dragon now on it;s second version is the best dragon in the show with real fire breathing capabilities. The first summer it debut it was missing for most of the first summer due to technical difficulties, who remembers that?my favorite part is the villians did not find Aurora because they were looking for her as a - pikaplaid   8318.8 #16 1-29-13 10:58AM Like(1)  Reply

Love everything about this movie. Another fact- Aurora/Briar Rose has the least amount of spoken lines throughout the movie and they all come at the second half. - aprilinjune4   483.5 #517 1-29-13 10:30PM Like(1)  Reply
Saw this movie with my mom and dad at the drive-in. We had to put our jammies on before we went. My little brother fell asleep. So I got to climb up front and sit between my mom and dad. You know how hard it is hearing a movie through a little speaker but I think they made out of tinfoil.  - Midasgold   633.3 #377 1-29-14 2:10PM Like(1)  Reply
I couldn't resist commenting on this, my apologies for the tardy bump, well, 1 year and 1, but what a cute memory that was! Thanks so much Midasgold for sharing that! Your comments always make me smile! "jammies" - Duchess_SMK  6634.7 #24 1-30-14 9:42AM

Very interesting that the film originally made a loss. Something tells me that the DVDs and "Aurora" merchandise sold over the years may have turned this around. Great job Duchess. - RapunzelledColey   148.5 #2925 1-29-13 11:01AM Like  Reply

Love the classics! The perfect movie! Sigh. I am curious how much rereleases and video/DVD sales have made over the years. So sad it actually lost money originally! I hope Walt wasn't raked over the coals for that! - MacaronMerida   4743.4 #39 1-29-13 11:28AM Like  Reply
