IMO i think Tron Legacy is a more definitive sequel simply based on the continuation not only with the original characters but the storyline as well. As I recall Return to Oz was a very similar storyline with adaptations from the novels with some of the same characters (Dorothy/Aunt Em/ToTo) and new characters (Jack) and props (ruby slippers/tornado) which to me is not a true sequel but quantifies as a remake based on the combination of all three novels and adaptations from original film. Funny thing is Disney was almost forced into making this film. The original book had been in the public domain in the US since 1956. The remaining sequels entered public domain in the US from 1960 through 1986.
