If I'm not mistaken, it's a sort of case that holds a scroll of paper inside with Hebrew verses. I was always told that it's supposed to bring you good luck, good health, happiness and good fortune. It's supposed to be placed at the entrance of the house and possibly all doors. I think. Again I could be mistaken on done of this. At least that's what my grandma told me.
