You can call and make reservations by phone to make sure you get the date you need. You can also test your luck and walk up to the guided tours area (walk in to your left and it will be on your left side). We LOVED the tour and plan on doing it again. I never understood why hotels in walking distance to Disneyland charge per day parking.

you could always go to Magic Mountain and go through metal dectors. Just be sure to get over towards HM before they start limiting entry (they rope off near Golden Horseshoe sometimes). If the times are 9 and 10:15, I'd get over by Critter Country around 9. You can go on a ride or wait, but around 9:30-ish you should be able to move in and save your spot. That way you're only waiting 45 min.
